Amerikaans acteur, eigenlijk Walter Edward Cox. Vaak gecast als excentriek personage, soms ook in low-budget horrorfilms, maarvoornamelijk in meer ambitieuze producties. Vestigde zijn reputatie met hoofdrollen in Brewster McCloud (top-billed in de titelrol; Robert Altman, 1970) en vooral met de hem letterlijk op het lijf geschreven zwarte komedie Harold and Maude (Hal Ashby, 1971), als een suïcidale jongeman die verliefd wordt op een 79-jarige overlevende van de holocaust (Ruth Gordon). Verrassende comeback in de spotlights met zijn laatste film, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (Wes Anderson, 2004). Officieel filmdebuut in Gouden Palmwinnaar M*A*S*H (Altman, 1970), na uncredited rolletjes in Up the Down Staircase (Robert Mulligan, 1967) en Sweet Charity (als bloemenkind; Bob Fosse, 1969).
