Japans acteur, eigenlijk Motohisa Nakadai. Majestueus steracteur bij onder meer Akira Kurosawa en Masaki Kobayashi. Top-billed in een dubbelrol in Kagemusha (Kurosawa, 1980) en als de naar Lear gemodelleerde stervende koning in Ran (Kurosawa, 1985). Ook top-billed in de trilogie Ningen no joken/The Human Condition (Kobayashi, 1959-61), in Seppuku/Harakiri (Kobayashi, 1962) en het spokendrieluik Kaidan/Kwaidan (Kobayashi, 1964). De niet universitair of als acteur opgeleide Nakadai werkte als winkelbediende in Tokio, toen Kobayashi hem toevallig ontdekte en een kleine (uncredited) rol bezorgde in Kabe atsuki heya/The Thick-Walled Room (1953, gedistribueerd in 1956). Ongeveer tegelijkertijd speelde Nakadai uncredited een samoerai in Shichinin no samurai/The Seven Samurai (1954). Officieel acteerdebuut in Hi no tori/Phoenix (Umetsugu Inoue, 1956).
